1. Measure your dog lying down
Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail while they are lying in their usual sleeping position, then add a few inches. That total is the minimum length the sleeping surface should have. If your dog stretches out, go bigger. If they curl up in a ball, a round bed can work even if it looks smaller.
2. Match the bed to how your dog sleeps
- Curlers: dogs that sleep curled up usually like a round donut-style bed with raised edges to lean against.
- Stretchers: dogs that sleep stretched out need a flat, rectangular bed with room to extend their legs.
- Older or stiff dogs: a thicker, supportive bed is easier to get on and off than a thin pad.
3. Check the space where the bed will go
Measure the spot in your home too, not just the dog. A bed that blocks a doorway or does not fit in the crate will end up in a corner, unused.
4. Think about cleaning
Dogs track in dirt and shed fur. A bed that is easy to clean will last longer in real use than one that looks good only on day one.
